Car seats

Whether you have a short or a long ride ahead, your child must always be firmly locked in his car seat. It must of course comply with European standards, but also be comfortable, adapted to the size of your child ... and to your car!

How do you know which group of car seats is suitable for your child?

To help you choose the right car seat, the car seats are divided into groups . This classification is based on weight . To give you an idea how long your child can sit in a certain car seat, we give the age and height as an indication.

group 0+

up to 13 kg

up to 12 to 15 months

40 - 85 cm

group 1

9 - 18 kg

12 months to 4 years

80 - 105 cm

group 1/2/3

9 - 36 kg

12 months to 12 years

80-135 / 150 cm

group 2/3

15 - 36 kg

from 3.5 to 12 years

105-135 / 150 cm

When switching to a higher group of car seats?

Only switch to a larger model car seat as soon as your child's head protrudes above the edge of the seat, or if he has reached the maximum weight of the seat. A lower group of car seats always offers more protection.
From group 0+ to group 1: do not step too quickly because the position against the direction of traffic is the safest. So wait until the head of your child rises above the cockpit of a portable car seat or until it reaches the maximum weight of the seat.
From group 1 to group 2/3: make the transition as soon as your child's shoulders protrude 2 cm above the highest position of the belts and the head rest is in the highest position.

You can also opt for a car seat with group 1/2/3: this combines group 1 with group 2/3. You use it for children from 12 months to 10/12 years. These car seats meet all legal standards, but they are less specifically adapted to your child's physique at any age. This is the case when you opt for 2 separate car seats (first a group 1, later a group 2/3 car seat).

What is IsoFix?

A car seat or base with IsoFix has 2 fastening hooks that you have to click into 2 anchors between the seat and the back of your car's back seat. The anchors are part of the body. So you are sure that you always confirm the car seat in your car. In addition, you snap it directly to the chassis of your car, so that even in the event of a collision, it stays firmly in place.
Not all cars have the integrated IsoFix system. To know if that is the case with your car, consult the manual for your vehicle.

Until when is a car seat mandatory?

Since September 2006 the Belgian law requires a car seat or lowering cushion to be used for children less than 135 cm (about 10 years). In some countries such as Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and Switzerland this is even mandatory up to 150 cm.

Switching from a car seat to a raised cushion is only possible if your child is at least 110 cm tall and weighs a minimum of 15 kg. A car seat with backrest from group 2/3 is more comfortable and safer because it also offers lateral protection.
A solid car seat is therefore an investment that lasts a long time.

Practical info: good to know!

  • You need to transport newborn babies (group 0+) against the direction of travel in your car, which is much safer. This way his back catches the blow of a collision, and not his neck. The neck muscles of your baby are not yet fully developed, and that can be dangerous. Attention: never put a car seat on the front passenger seat against the direction of travel when an airbag is active. Turn off the airbag or place your baby in the back.

  • If your baby is still very small, you can best use a reduction cushion to give his head more support in his portable car seat.

  • The straps of the seat must connect very well around your baby. There may be a maximum of 1 cm of play.

  • The shoulder straps can be adjusted in height. Make sure they always leave at shoulder height (or slightly lower).

  • After a car accident, it is strongly recommended to replace the car seat. The seat can be invisibly damaged, and thus less safe.

  • The car seat should always be firmly secured , even if your child is not in it. If you brake abruptly, it can otherwise become a dangerous projectile. With a seat with IsoFix you do not have to attach the seat with the belt, because it is firmly anchored in the IsoFix points of your car.

  • Your child is the safest in the back of the car. Choose the right side, or the side of the sidewalk . Statistically, the street side is the most dangerous. Moreover, you can safely put it in your car or take it out.

  • If your car is equipped with side airbags , make sure that your child's head is never in the airbag's 'dropout zone'.

  • Always click your child firmly , even for short trips. Does your child also regularly accompany others? Make sure you have a safe seat in those cars!

  • Has your car been in the sun ? Then feel whether the seat of the car seat is not too hot.
